Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool and countless other films and beloved Canadian, has endorsed this book. And yes, I am shamelessly name dropping in the hopes that it drives traffic to my website. Cast with two extremely unlikely and highly memorable amateur sleuths, this book is a wild ride from start to finish. An absolute blast worthy of some of your summer time!

When Tina gets a call from her brother in the dead of night, it seems like all the others that have come before. He’s holed up in some stash house and needs his big sister to come to the rescue. But when she gets there, he is nowhere to be found. There is a dead guy, and it doesn’t look like natural causes. Just as she’s about to dial 911, she gets a text that reads “Shhhh…”

Romantic Comedy

Rating: 7/10

Daisy’s pies are magical, and I’m not just talking about the flavour. She can add in a dash of hope or joy or bravery. She also has the ingredients necessary to lace them with vengeance, enough to kill someone. But she only goes after domestic abusers so, all good right? Wrong. Read to the end to get my recipe for a rom com, with a Donna spin of course!

Fantasy Fiction

Rating: 8/10

You think you know the stories, but perhaps you don’t know them at all. Prepare to rethink all those happily ever afters. To have the lines blurred between beastly natures and beautiful visages. And even have some characters show up where they don’t belong. A topsy turvy delight!

Mere moments after takeoff, flight 1421 crashes into the ocean. What started off as a plane became a ship when it hit the water. And when it started to sink, well they call that a submarine. But it’s not built for sustaining life underwater, so a daring rescue mission is the only hope the final survivors have of making it out alive. Prepare yourself for a full scale adrenaline rush!

As I was reading this book, I was picturing, in blissful rotation, Ryan Reynolds, Keanu Reeves and Bruce Willis. And not because this was a romantic saga in which I believed the happy ending to me mine, but because it was an epic action adventure starring the quintessential hero.

Non-Fiction Essays

Samantha Irby never seems to run out of fodder for saucy and hilarious musings on the mundanities of life. She never shy’s away from putting pen to paper about life’s least flattering situations. In her latest she tackles her toilet troubles, her unapologetic love of all things uncool, she provides us with the definition of all the potential tags on porn videos.

You see, she is no ordinary housekeeper. She was born into a world of con artists and thieves, hardly fit company for the highbrow residents of the grand house she was in charge of keeping. They probably shouldn’t have fired her!

One night, trying to close the bar and enjoy a glass of wine, one of the regulars’ barrels in and interrupts Sophie’s quiet time.  When he thoughtlessly chugs her wine, he has no idea it will be the last thing that passes his lips.  Well, except for her knife as it slices out his tongue.  He’s dead at the time, but still. And that is just the beginning.

Miriam is a foulmouthed, hard drinking, chain smoking, wickedly articulate snark queen who I may have a serious girl crush on, I mean what’s not to love! She knows just the right combination of words to tear you a new one and leave you with the sure knowledge that she has bested you in every way conceivable. And oh yeah, I would think twice about touching her if I was you…

Speculative Sci-Fi

Seven years ago, everyone in the world went blind in a matter of months.  The miracle of technology stepped in to save the day, creating a device that approximates vision, downloading what it ‘sees’ directly to people’s brains. Unsurprisingly a nefarious entity of epic brilliance finds a way to hack it and alter what people are seeing.

After her first kill, at the tender age of five, Ruby waited for guilt to set in.  But it never did. Not the first time or any of the times that would follow. It’s not like she’s an out-of-control homicidal maniac. Yes, she’s unrepentant, but you may find yourself hard pressed to blame her. But she’s definitely got some issues…

Lizzie, our dead women, is narrating this tale from the grave. And as she tells us her story, the one that comes before meeting her gory end, she is snarky. blunt and whip smart and I loved her! She has no illusions about being missed and fully expects that the inhabitants of the small town she grew up in will say she had it coming. And they may be right.

Historical Fiction

Rating: 8.5/10

This is the amazing story off two literary legends, Mary Wollstonecraft & Mary Shelly, their scandalous and passionate loves, their unimaginable tragedies, their profound literary achievements, and the connection that binds one to the other, even beyond death. This is a perfectly balanced narrative that any booklover is sure to be charmed and absorbed by in equal measure!
