Magic For Liars - Sarah Gailey
/Crime/Fantasy
Rating: 8/10
What if you’re not magic. You are not a chosen one with powers you could never even dream of. You don’t get to leave your humdrum life behind and go to a mysterious school where they teach magic. And what if all the things you are not, your twin sister is.
Ivy is a PI, barely eking out a living, who finds herself called to a school for magicians where a woman has been brutally murdered. Split right in half, laid out like a book with a broken spine. And where Ivy’s sister Tabitha is a popular faculty member. And somehow involved in the mystery surrounding the death.
On the path to determining who’s the killer, Ivy will need to find out who’s a witness, who’s important and who has the biggest secrets. Figuring out those secrets will prove almost impossible given the volume of them she uncovers.
The best moments of the story are the ones where Ivy interviews a veritable parade of potential suspects in the library, both students and teachers. And let’s be honest, who among us doesn’t love sniffing out high school gossip?
While this novel is imbued with elements of crime and magic, it’s the story of these sisters that drives the narrative forward. And the character of Mrs. Webb was an absolute delight so keep an eye out for her!
Footnote: This is NOT like that other magical school. You know the one I’m talking about.
