You Know Her - Meagan Bennett
/Crime Thriller
Rating: 6/10
What could have been a deliriously vengeful narrative is bloated with so much grotesque imagery that the premise is never fully actualized. Layer in an ending both haphazard and annoying and my rating got pulled below my standard for a good/very good read.
At its core, this is a novel about feminine rage. Sophie works as a bartender, one of many jobs where women are considered commodities and she has had enough of that nonsense. Nora is a police officer on the cusp of being promoted and is growing weary of the constant snide commentary from the men not raising in the ranks.
One night, trying to close the bar and enjoy a glass of wine, one of the regulars’ barrels in and interrupts Sophie’s quiet time. When he thoughtlessly chugs her wine, he has no idea it will be the last thing that passes his lips. Well, except for her knife as it slices out his tongue. He’s dead at the time, but still.
Turns out, she’s only just gotten started.
And when the bodies start piling up? Same can be said for Nora.
