Home Is Where The Bodies Are - Jeneva Rose
/Thriller
Rating: 8/10
This book is not an intricate thriller with a whopper of a twist that will satisfy all those singular readerly appetites. At least not for me. I saw the twist coming.
What it is, is a propulsive page turner full of compelling and relatable characters and hefty dose of juicy family drama.
After their mother dies, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. While going through decades of their parent’s belongings, they stumble upon a collection of home videos that reveal a dark family secret, one that could explain the disappearance of their father years earlier. A secret that their mother took to the grave.
A light, fun and engaging read that might have you rushing to the attic of your childhood home to unearth your own family’s long buried secrets.
Footnote: I loved this passage, which hints at the unexpected depth of the insights revealed by the characters. This one from one of the siblings who is a fledgling writer.
“The best stories come from those that are flawed, broken really. Those that have endured trials and tribulations. Those who have faced the world and come out on the bottom. Only they can tell stories worth listening to, for they have had more than one beginning, more than one middle they’ve dragged themselves through and more than one ending. And despite it all, their story continues.”
