YA Fiction/Fantasy

Rating: 7/10

Let’s be honest, whether in fiction or in fact, the girl has always swooned for the brooding bad boy. Our heroine, a cleric raised in a monastery who speaks with gods and possesses magical powers, is no different.

As she vows to end a war with a rival kingdom by bringing the gods back to them, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to her enemies. Shocking.

This author does a good job keeping her world building easy to follow so that the reader isn’t lost in complexities that prevent the enjoyment of the characters. And they are a joy; well-drawn, realistic and full of witty banter. As you know I love me some good repartee.

Footnote: The ending felt a bit arbitrary and abrupt, which might be a bit risky for the first in a trilogy. It could in fact end right here.
