Rating: 7/10
This novel is, at the core, an exploration of the lies and inventions that can make up a life. Our heroine finds herself casually and reluctantly recruited into the world of espionage during war time. As she plays at being other people, she’s at risk of her own personality becoming the fictitious one. If you are looking for a precise and factual portrayal of war this is not the book for you. As the author herself put it, “this book is a wrenching apart of history followed by an imaginative reconstruction.”
Footnote: Sharp, brilliant and complex use of language. The wry humor may be hard to pick up on so read carefully!
