In Short-New Horror Novellas
/Creepy Reads To Curl Up With…Keep The Lights On!
GUILLOTINE – DELILAH S. DAWSON
Fashionista Dez doesn’t want to date Patrick, she just wants to meet his powerful editor mother. When she scores an invite to a family holiday reunion, she’s sure she can put up with his arrogance and fend off his advances long enough to get an internship. Despite the initial excitement at seeing how the 1% live, once all the family members are on the island, things take a very dark turn. In this blood splattered dissection of the uber rich, fury flows as freely as champagne. And on the menu? The family’s just desserts. A stylish and macabre novella that bluntly shows the disparity between those who serve and those who are served. Who comes out on top in this grotesque battle? I’m not telling.
WILLIAM – MASON COILE
Henry’s agoraphobia keeps him inside his “smart” house and soon he develops a fixation on the project he keeps hidden away in the attic. Not even showing his creation to his pregnant wife. When company comes for dinner, Henry can’t resist showing off, but soon what appears to be a brilliant AI robot, turns out to be something much more malignant. The robot, William, has begun make decisions outside of its programming, forming appetites, gaslighting its creator. And now, it wants out. To get there, he may first need to lock everyone in. The dread and malevolence leap off the page, and the final paragraph was stunning!
THE NIGHT GUEST – HILDUR KNUTSDOTTIR
Sleep disorders take center stage in this creepy AF Icelandic horror novel. In The Night Guest, a woman wakes up more tired each day, deeply confused about what’s going on with her body until she buys a step-tracker and finds out she’s been sleep-walking for miles each night. In order to understand her pathology, she must finally accept her past, and while the novel ends somewhat ambiguously, one thing we do come to comprehend is that this lady is truly messed up.
Footnote: in all of these stories, the author’s high jump over the biggest hurdle in horror fiction, ensuring that what’s on the page will translate into fear for the reader. It did that spectacularly.
