Books For Foodies…

Its considered rude to stare at someone in the act of eating, a voyeuristic yearning that many of us sublimate by reading about food in literature. A pleasure that is akin to the satisfaction of feeding, and that of being fed.

Food is love.  Food is nourishment. Food is connection.  Food identifies who we are and where we have been.  It strengthens us in times of fragility and calms us in times of discord. And it cannot be left unsaid that food can be wielded as an instrument of death. 

Food preoccupies our thoughts daily so it’s no surprise that it appears in almost every book, to some degree or another.  Food is everywhere in fiction, tantalizing readers with luxurious and lavish descriptions of the aromas and flavours being consumed by the characters.  

For this collection of reading recommendations, I have gone beyond books where food is only glimpsed at.  Instead choosing those that evoke and entice with their seemingly endless capacity for sensory pleasure.

Lessons In Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus

Elizabeth is a woman in the 1960’s, trying to succeed in a field rife with misogyny. She is blunt, impatient with small talk and niceties and does not suffer fools well. She stays laser focused on her work until she has the temerity to fall in love with a fellow scientist. And then gets herself knocked up to boot! When she is fired, she takes on a job as a host of a cooking show with hilarious outcomes. A laugh out loud, shrewdly observant, gem of a read.

Marrying The Ketchups – Jennifer Close

There are three things the Sullivan family knows to be absolutely true; the Chicago Cubs will always be the underdogs; historical progress is inevitable; and their grandfather, founder of Sullivans bar, makes the best burgers in town. So, what happens when the Cubs win the World Series, a dolt who shall not be named on this site is elected to president and grandpa Bud drops dead? A comedy of manners about three generations of a restaurant family that will feed a readers soul, if not their tummy!

Hot Mess – Emily Belden

Allie is used to playing by the rules, until Chicagos most sought after, up and coming culinary wunderkind Benji, walks into her world and pulls her into his. The only thing more renowned that his mouthwatering masterpieces and luscious good looks? His struggle with addiction and reckless tendency to live life on the edge. But loving someone means supporting them no matter the havoc they wreak, at least that is what Allie is telling herself. A snark fest!

The Golden Spoon – Jessa Maxwell

Firstly, can we talk about the cover? Brilliant. Secondly, can we talk about the premise? Murder mystery set during a baking competition. Also, brilliant. Honestly, I’m surprised it took so long to have a fictional tale of murder and mayhem surrounding the cutthroat world of culinary competitions, but I’m just glad it’s finally arrived! Its clue meets British Bakeoff with a dash of Hell’s Kitchen thrown in.

Love & Saffron – Kim Fay

When a young Joan sends a fan letter along with saffron to mid aged Imogen, a life changing friendship is born. Joan is just starting out as a writer for a newspapers food section and Imogen lives on a remote island with limited access to certain culinary delights. Over decades these women share stories of food and love and all they mean in our lives. A gem of a book that will offer the reader a respite from the chaos of day to day life.

Kitchens Of The Great Midwest – J. Ryan Stradel

When Lars wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine, and a dashing sommelier, he’s left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He’s determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. We see Eva’s journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast. Each chapter tells the story of a single dish and character, delving into the ways food creates community and a sense of identity.

Sourdough – Robin Sloan

Lois is a software engineer at a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers quickly close up shop. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it. As she starts to share loaves with her colleagues, a whole new world begins to emerge.

The School Of Essential Ingredients – Erica Bauermeister

The Kitchen Front – Jennifer Ryan

Mastering The Art Of French Murder – Colleen Cambridge

I once spent a lovely afternoon with Julia Child. True story. During my beloved bookstore years, I was delegated the welcome task of being her assistant over the course of a book signing and cooking segment. Not to worry, I only touched the books! If this seems a non sequitur, rest assured I have a point. In this utterly charming cozy mystery, Julia Child is a character. Tabitha is living in post war Paris with her grandfather, tutoring Americans in French and trying to learn how to cook from friend and neighbour Julia Child. Everything about her time there is a pleasure until the day she and Julia return from the market to discover that a dead body has been found in the building. And were off!

The Chicken Sisters – K.J Del’Antonia

In a tiny Kansas town, Chicken Mimi’s and Chicken Frannies have spent a century vying to serve up the best friend chicken in the state, and the legendary feud between their owners has lasted just as long. Amanda, who grew up working for one of those families and scandalously married into the other, is tired of being caught in the middle. When she gets them cast on Food Wars, the fires only get stoked. Insanely fun!

The Hundred-Foot Journey – Richard C. Morais

After tragedy finds them eating their way around the world, the Haji family settles in a small town in France. A Certain Hunger – Chelsea G. Summers

Food critic Dorothy loves what she does.
