Nobody Will Tell You This But Me - Bess Kalb
/Memoir
Rating: 6/10
This author employs an unconventional yet charming narrative device, channeling the voice and personality of her now deceased grandmother Bobby to tell their story. Finicky, fiercely nurturing, magnetic and outspoken, it’s a voice impossible to resist.
The heart and soul of their powerful connection were the phone conversations and voicemails containing a steady stream of unsolicited life advice. The author saved every one of them and can dial into warnings about anything from the dangers of cat feces to that of hair straighteners. We also share in reminiscences of the moments that stood out for the author.
My personal favourite anecdote; Bess was hysterical at being left at preschool, so her grandmother took her and sat outside the classroom every day for a week. Bess would check frequently that she was still there, and she always was. Until it was okay that she wasn’t.
Footnote: I am comforted to know that I’m not the only one who’s biggest concern about death is that there will be nothing to read…
