101 Life Lessons Without The Bullshit - Humble The Poet
/Self-Help (ish)
Rating: 6.5/10
As with his first book, 101 Simple Truths For A Better Life, our author offers up his wisdom in small bites. Although wisdom is perhaps a generous characterization here.
This volume is done with a slightly heavier hand than the first; foraying into faith, shame and even suicide. Because it’s not quite as fun and too short for real take always, I feel its self-help for the social media generation. Where your character count is limited, and your audience attention span is roughly thirty seconds.
My favourite bits included his commentary on how we internalize our every waking moment to the point of assuming we are the center of the universe. And his use of the term; grinds my gears. Pure gold!
Footnote: I wonder if it’s my age that has me bemoaning the fact that so much of what is written under the umbrella of self-help is a blatant statement of the obvious. Rather than ponder that for too long, I will simply be grateful that at 50+ I am still in search of the epiphany I was at 20.
