Vox - Christina Dalcher
/Thriller (Dystopian)
Rating: 8.5/10
Voice: the power or faculty of uttering sounds through the mouth, the range of which is distinctive and defining to an individual.
What if you had no right to use your voice to its full potential? If you could only speak 100 words a day?
Imagine your son thought you should be subservient to all men, including him. Seen, but not heard. Catering, cleaning, cooking, all but curtsying. Then imagine your young daughter chasing a reward of sweets for speaking the fewest number of words in a day.
If that were you, you might be asking yourself, what would I be willing to do to get my voice back? And the voices of all the women I love?
More thriller than political statement, there are still plenty of moments of a terrifying recognition of some future possible level of subordination.
Footnote: If you were limited to 100 words a day you wouldn’t even be able to read this review aloud.
