The Ascent - Adam Plantinga

Thriller

Rating: 8.5/10

When a high security prison experiences technical failures, a wrongly imprisoned retired cop and the governor’s idealist daughter are going to have to work together with a group of misfits to get out alive. All they have to do is get from the ground floor infirmary to the roof, bypassing six floors of convicts who may or may not be free from their cells.

If this sounds like a recipe for steadily escalating mayhem, it is; if you think you know where it’s headed, you probably do. But it will impress you with clever plot points, make your pulse pound and entertain you. That sounds pretty good to me.

Kurt is our cop, and he is very reminiscent of Jack Reacher or John McClane; a take no prisoners (pun not intended), man of few words, champion for the vulnerable type of character. And I will tell you this, if I was in a tough spot, I would want him on my side. But make no mistake, he has hidden depths.

The pace of this book is relentless, barely giving he reader time to take a breath between chapters. A thriller in every sense of the word.

Footnote: It’s important to note that the violence in this novel is brutal and raw and detailed, if that is not something you are up for then I would pass.
