The Plot - Jean Hanff Korelitz - Top Book Pick!
/Mystery/Suspense
Rating: 9.5/10
Plot (noun)
1) A sequence of events in a narrative, as in a novel
2) An immoral or illegal plan
3) A designated section of land, as in a gravesite
Trust me on this, you will revisit more than one of these definitions in this brilliantly written novel. You will find yourself ensnared in a tangle of literary treachery and hubris populated by vivid and compelling characters. Should reading be this fun? Hell yeah!
Jake was once a promising novelist, now he exists in a special kind of purgatory for “formerly” promising writers. He’s teaching wannabees in a third-rate writing program how to become what eludes him. When an arrogant student shows up for a one-on-one meeting, Jake has no idea he’s about to be blown away by a standout plot. The once in a decade, change the tides of publishing kind of plot.
The kind of plot that every reader will borrow or buy. That will lend it or listen to it. That will gift it or receive it. And everyone who’s not a reader, they will hear about it.
Three years later Jake realizes he hasn’t heard a whisper about it. After some rigorous internet sleuthing, he discovers his old student has died. Has in fact been dead since a few weeks after the course ended. No book published.
Surely Jake owes it to the world to see this plot on the page, right? It would be wasteful not to. And it’s not like he killed for it, right?
His book becomes a blockbuster success; spots on all the bestsellers lists, accolades from all corners, bidding war on the movie rights and a level of success most novelists only dream about.
And then the dream shatters. Jake gets a message from his website. You are a thief. From that moment forward the author crafts some of the BEST cat and mouse maneuvers I have ever read.
And that is all I will say about that. I don’t want to spoil a bit of this stellar book.
