/History’s Fictional Archives…
“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect” Anais Nin
Reading can feel a little, or a lot, like time travel, no matter when the story is set. Most bookworms have experienced the surreal disorientation of sitting down to read and only emerging from their book-induced reverie hours later, having let the here and now pass by while they explored the worlds wrought on those pages.
Historical fiction can deepen this effect, especially when it's based on real-life events, granting readers permission to blur fact and fiction. A fictionalized retelling reconstructs pivotal events previously known to a reader only through a backwards glance, resulting in a restoration of stories that have lain dormant for too long.
The historical novelist introduces a reader to the inner lives of people across time and place, and in doing so illuminates untold stories, inviting us to connect to a past that feels as if it, and its teachings, are vanishing. It’s the works of these writers that I have gathered for you in this feature.
But remember this as you delve into my recommendations; the past changes a little every time we retell it.
