Angel Maker - Alex North
/Thriller
Rating: 7.5/10
As always, this author walks a fine line between horror, mystery, detective story and something darker that lives in the shadows running along the edge of these genres. The result is a gritty, and at times unsettling, read.
Katie was living the normal life of a teenager in the throes of first love and safe in the knowledge that she was adored by her family. When her brother Chris is attacked by a deranged stranger, everything changes. Seventeen years later, her brother, having long battled addiction and homelessness, is missing. As she sets out to find him, she will uncover horrors that are almost incomprehensible.
The story is told from multiple perspectives beyond Katie’s, including Chris’s and another set of siblings that have a dark and depraved past.
All our characters spend a lot of time deeply considering whether their decisions are somehow predetermined. Or not, depending on which character the reader is in the company of.
Ultimately my belief is that most of the moments to come in our future won’t be important, but a handful will turn out to be pivotal, maybe even life changing. But we won’t know which until we get there.
