Goodnight Beautiful - Aimee Molloy (Replay)
/Thriller
Rating: 8.5/10
As I get ready to share my review of the outside of the usual box domestic thriller Golden Couple on Thursday, I thought I would remind you of another that fits that description!
This is one of those book reviews where I have to be judicious in my description to ensure I avoid the peril of spoiling this treat of a read for you. And trust me on this, it’s worth the circuitous route I’m about to take…
Let’s say you pick up what you think is going to be another in the ceaseless stream of domestic thrillers, hoping it might in some way be remarkable. A skim of the back cover confirms the classic ingredients are there; a couple, a secret or two, the potential lure of bad choices and the promise of an ending that culminates with a stunning twist.
That doesn’t begin to cover where this book is about to take you…
Your humming along, turning the pages and suddenly…bam! You find yourself reading a topsy turvy reinterpretation of a novel by your most beloved favourite author. And not just any novel among his prolific collection, but one of the top ten. That would be enough of an unadulterated delight for this reader, but this author continues to execute spectacular feats of misdirection at every turn.
Well done, I look forward to seeing what trickery is next in this magician of an author’s bag of tricks!
Footnote: A funhouse mirror of a book, your likely seeing something entirely different than what you think you are with every reflection.
