Rod: The Autobiography - Rod Stewart

Memoir

Rating: 8/10

Rod Stewart has one of the most iconic and successful music careers of all time.  His deep love for soulful music and a husky beauty of a voice have served him well, despite an exuberance for hijinks that inundated his early days.

When a reader signs up for a rock ‘n roll biography they expect to be regaled with tales of debauchery, and they will get them in spades here.  I must applaud Stewart for telling some cringe worthy tales of his sex capades. I believe that he genuinely adores woman, even when he doesn’t always treat them well.  He owns every bit of his bad behavior.

From his early days with the Jeff Beck Group, through his abiding friendship with Ronnie Wood, through all three of his marriages and countless romances, Rod never portrays himself as anything other than an imperfect man.

A charming read that is funny and self-deprecating and not remotely self-congratulatory. In his own words, Rod considers himself one of the luckiest men in the world. Turns out he’s a humble one too.

A Few Fun Bits:

1.  The hair gets its own chapter.  I am only slightly exaggerating.

2.  He’s a model train guy. A whole floor of his considerable home is dedicated to them.  Nerd.

3.  Missing his Woodstock performance turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to his career. Lucky indeed.
