The Therapist - B.A. Paris
/Thriller/Mystery
Rating: 5/10
Alice and Leo have just moved into an idyllic gated community, marking a deeper commitment in their relationship. As Alice attempts to befriend her new neighbours, she discovers a devasting, grisly secret about her new home. The previous owners are dead, one murdered in that very house and one by their own hand. If this wasn’t enough of a shock, Alice finds out that Leo knew all about it and never said a word.
Alice embarks on a dissection of the labyrinth of secrets and lies that are being concealed by seemingly everyone in the book. As she spirals down rabbit holes leading every which way, she begins to grate on everyone. Including this reader. Alice is a bit…much. Finding suspects at every turn and yet still being oblivious to the obvious clues. A reveal I could see coming from almost the beginning, she was still shocked by.
Meh. That was the prevailing reaction I had to this read. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Mostly bored by it. Sometimes that says more about me and my mood and my current circumstances than it does about the book or author. In this case the author has had a consistent run of okay offerings so it’s time to remove them from my rotation.
Note To Self: Make better choices! Certainly, as far as the thriller and mystery books that make it to your To Be Read shelf. Cull down the consistently average rated authors, repetitive plots, and find more unique premises and debut authors!
