Hench - Natalie Zina Walschots
/Sci Fi/ Speculative Fiction
Rating: 8/10
When a book blurb claims that the story you are about to immerse yourself in is about a young woman who discovers the greatest superpower, for good or bad, is a properly executed spreadsheet, I am in!
Anna is a Hench, one of the countless factotums, gofers, grunts, peons, or warm buddies that villains’ use to do their evil bidding.
After suffering catastrophic injuries while executing her duties, at the hands of the hero no less, Anna starts to run the numbers. Calculating the collateral damage so called heroes inflict as they go about “saving” the world. Her findings have her plotting the most diabolical of revenges, fueled by her ferocious rage and backed by her villainous new boss.
A witty and inventive novel that turns the superhero character trope on its head, ripping of the masks and revealing all their dirty little secrets. An excellent deconstruction awash with moral ambiguity.
Footnote: Anna eventually earns a moniker suitable for her particular brand of villainy, The Auditor. Love it!!
