Kill The Next One - Federico Axat
/Fiction
Rating: 6/10
Whatever you might end up saying for or against this book, the opening sentence certainly grabs hold.
“Ted McKay was about to put a bullet through his brain when the doorbell rang.”
Ted is one of those folks who can’t let a bell go unanswered and finds a total stranger on his doorstep offering an alternative proposition to his plan. If Ted kills two other men in dire need of being removed from the face of the earth, another will kill him and spare his loved ones the pain of suicide. A murderous chain that if it would have been kept taught, would have been thrilling. However, it frayed a bit, and then sadly, more than a bit.
That being said I stuck with it and was glad I did so, the conclusion of this literary fever dream of a book was as satisfying as it was provocative.
Footnote: For some reason the author thought it necessary to include a demented possum in the story. Yes, you read that right.
