Little Threats - Emily Schultz
/Fiction/Mystery
Rating: 8/10
Twin Kennedy finds the world has moved on without her after being released from the prison where she has served fifteen years for murder. Despite pleading guilty in order to receive a more lenient sentence, she isn’t sure she committed the crime.
As she reacquaints herself with living in the free world the reader is given insight into the stark realities of life after prison and the repercussions of violence in a close-knit community.
Unquestionably there is a mystery to be solved here but at its core this is a story about the fragile and tenuous bonds that we at times find ourselves navigating in our relationships. The author conveys the fabric of family, both past and present, in her astute and moving writing style.
A sampling for you…
“The dead girl never gets to write her own story. Her side of the story is unwritten, and that becomes the secondary tragedy.”
“At times you cry only because you’ve been given permission by something the world understands more than what is really causing your pain”
Footnote: A slow burn of a book that dispenses the unexpected in ways you might think are more benign to your sensibilities; but give it a minute.
