Save Me The Plums - Ruth Reichl
/Gourmet Memoir
Rating: 8/10
This book details the years of renowned food writer and restaurant critic Ruth Riechl’s job as editor of Gourmet Magazine.
This utterly charming memoir is at its core a reminder that not only living things die. Dreams, ideals, pursuits, relationships; the loss of any of these is bound to hurtle even the most resilient of us into a period of mourning. But this is not a story of the sadness that descends upon us after such a loss, but rather the embracing of the wonder and the joy in the moments when we are in them.
The authors use of language settles on the readers heart and mind in the way a delightful morsel of food would upon the tongue. Rich, exquisite, delectable and tempting images that create a sensory circus.
Footnote: I loved the authors narrative on riding the subway. Describing it as a city in miniature. All cultures, religions, races and genders together in one place. How the smallness of the space creates an intimacy, where we can discover the secrets of strangers.
