Crib Notes-Backstage Pass-Part 1
/In this collection of memoirs of Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘N Roll, I would like to tell you that these books will mostly be about the Rock ‘N Roll, but who are we kidding! Decided it was time to assemble a selection of some favourite musical memoirs for your guilty pleasure!
HAMMER OF THE GODS – Stephen Davis
While none of the living members of Led Zeppelin will admit to having read this book, they aren’t denying it’s lurid and gleefully sordid tales of rock and roll debauchery! Savor with a grain of salt as some artistic license was likely taken on the part of the author, but for god’s sake devour it immediately! Touted to reveal the rock mystique of the greatest band of all time, that last bit being my ardent proclamation, this is a must read!
DIRT – Motley Crue with Neil Strauss
This display of excess from the rock and roll lifestyle of this band is said to make Led Zeppelin look like a bunch of blushing virgins. Certainly, there is absolutely no musical comparison. Motley Crue was never really all that great musically speaking, their biggest claim to fame being in whatever spectacle they were in the midst of putting on. That being said, this is still a great ride on a crazy train with some world class degenerates.
THE SUN, THE MOON & THE ROLLING STONES – Rich Cohen
By the time Cohen’s lifelong dream of going on tour with The Stones finally came to fruition, he thought it was too late. They were all so…old. Silly rabbit. They are rockin’ out like guys half their age! This is a candid and exhaustive elegy to a rock band. To get them off stage, I figure we would need to rip the microphones and instruments from their cold, dead hands.
ROCK SHE WROTE – Evelyn McDonnell
A provocative collection of writings about pop, rock and rap music; by women, about women. Covering a broadly diverse group of artists, we are gifted with a treasure trove of pop culture and musical history. As it reveals the stories of women, who despite differences in musical genres, share the fight against the rock patriarchy. The path they blaze mirrors that of women’s fight for equality across the years.
